The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health partners, identified Wright County Egg in Iowa as the source of "shell egg" (eggs in their shells) that caused a recent outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE). The eggs are packaged under different brand names and distributed nationwide. Consumers who have recalled eggs should throw them away or return them to the store for a refund. An outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) that has sickened hundreds of people across the country has led to a recall of shell eggs. On August 13, Wright County Egg voluntarily conducted a nationwide recall of shell eggs on 3 of its 5 farms. Further epidemiologic and traceback information led to Wright County Egg expanding its recall on August 18 to cover all 5 farms and 380 million eggs (according to company figures). The FDA is monitoring the recall, including conducting audit checks at retail stores, wholesalers, and distributors to make sure the recalled shell eggs are being removed from the market. The FDA is in ongoing communications with Wright County Egg to ensure that appropriate preventive measures are put in place to reduce the risk of recurrence.


Q: How do I read the numbers on the end of the egg cartons? There are quite a few of them, and I want to make sure I'm reading them correctly.

A: Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton. The plant number begins with the letter "P", followed by a number (P-1946 in the example below). The Julian date follows the plant number (223 in the example).

It is important to note that both the plant number and Julian date must match. If the Julian date does not match the affected plant number, then your eggs are not currently involved in the recall.
